Review of 25 Restaurant by Bedford Link

"Late November and the students at Bedford College catering department were next in line to be put under the spotlight and scrutiny of Bedford Link’s review team! Young, fresh faced, enthusiastic and slightly nervous is the best way to describe our greeting as we arrived at the re-named and re-furbished 25 Restaurant @ Bedford College. This was after an assignment carried out by their design students and the winning design was by Elise Robinson."

"The students rotate their roles when hosting a themed evening, half serving and waiting tables, half out of sight slaving over a hot stove to bring us what was to be an excellent meal. This was quite remarkable considering that it would be only their third service since enrolling at Bedford College’s highly regarded and respected catering department. A set menu is on offer, to make life that bit easier for everyone and each course is served to the customers roughly at the same time, to ensure there are few, if any, timing issues."

"We were invited along to one of their themed evenings to sample the Gourmet menu; starting off with pumpkin soup served with roasted pumpkin seeds and a warm crusty roll – a super way to start off and extremely tasty it was too. Wine and beers are available and this adds to the overall experience as customers begin to relax, unwind and enjoy the views of Bedford at night from the 5th floor."

"Second up was chicken liver pate served with a mixed berry jam and melba toast – smooth pate with wafer thin toast and a slightly sweet jam, a great combination. Portions are not huge due to the fact that there are four courses served, along with a choice of tea or coffee to finish, the quantity of food is more than adequate to satisfy most."

"Whole king prawns served in a light herb and garlic butter – perfectly cooked prawns and if you love garlic, this would be ideal for you, not too strong but well balanced. The service was good and each and every student is watched to ensure they are performing their duties correctly with a quiet and constructive word in their ear should it be necessary."

"What we considered the main course was then presented to us – loin of lamb with a gremolata crust, rich Madeira jus, roast and boiled potatoes with carrots and fine beans. Gremolata is a combination of parsley, lemon zest and garlic and was very good indeed and with the jus made for a fine plate of food."

"Finally on to the dessert and a great deal of work was put into it – A Study of Apple – apple served in three different ways, apple cider sorbet which was refreshing, apple fritter – hot and a sharp contrast to the sorbet with an apple bavarois to finish – a smooth and creamy dessert which was absolutely superb and thoroughly enjoyed by us."

"We cannot stress enough how impressive the service and food was and when you consider that the meal was only £18 per head, the value for money is exceptional. So if you fancy a really well cooked and presented meal with good service at an incredible price then we would advise you to give 25 restaurant a visit, however it would pay to book as it is very popular indeed."
